Privacy
For the Alex311 Reborn website (alex311-reborn.com, formerly alex311visibility.me) and the Alex311 Reborn iPhone app. Effective October 3, 2026.
The short version. You can browse without an account and nothing about you is kept. An account holds an id, not a profile. When you send a report, the City of Alexandria gets your contact details and photos because it requires them — and this site deletes its copies once the City has filed the request. There is no advertising, no tracking and no selling of anything. You can delete your account, and everything with it, at any time.
Who runs this. Herbert Industries, independently. It is not run by, affiliated with, or endorsed by the City of Alexandria.
Browsing
The map, the list, the record pages and the analytics show service requests the City of Alexandria publishes through its Alex311 portal — what was reported, where, when, its status, and any photos the City makes public. This site copies that public record; it does not add to it.
No account is needed, no cookies are set, and there is no analytics or advertising code. Like any website, the servers that host this one (Google Cloud) log each request's IP address and browser for a short time, for security and troubleshooting. Pages load map tiles from OpenStreetMap and a few open-source libraries from public content networks (unpkg, jsDelivr); those services see your IP address when your browser fetches from them.
An account
You sign in with Apple, Google, or a link or code emailed to you. Sign-in is handled by Google's Identity Platform, which keeps the email address you sign in with. What this site keeps for an account is:
- an account id, and the id the sign-in provider gives it;
- an email address only if an administrator invited you by email, or you gave one for the daily digest;
- a display name, if you choose to set one — shown only to you;
- which version of this policy you accepted, and when you last signed in;
- your open sign-ins (a session cookie on the website, a stored session in the app), kept here only as a one-way hash.
A code emailed to sign you in is kept for 15 minutes, in a form that cannot be read back.
Sending a report
A report you send from here is filed with the City of Alexandria through its own Alex311 form. To do that, this site sends the City:
- the request type, the address or location you chose, your description and your answers to the City's questions;
- your first and last name, email address and phone number, which the City requires on many request types;
- any photos you attach.
From then on the City holds that information under its own policies, and may publish parts of the request (not your contact details) in its public record.
On this side: your contact details and photos are deleted as soon as the City has filed the request. Photos are re-encoded before they are stored, which removes the hidden location and device data a phone puts in them. Photos on a request you never sent are deleted after 7 days. What remains is a record that a request was sent — its type, place and description, the City's case number, and the checks made to prevent abuse — without your name, email, phone or photos.
The iPhone app asks for your location only to suggest the address of a report or show requests near you, and only while you use it. A location reaches this site when you choose it for a report or search nearby; it is not tracked or kept as a history.
Following, rating and watching
- Your list — the requests you sent and the ones you follow.
- Ratings — whether a request was actually addressed, from 1 to 5. A rating is private unless you choose to show the score on that request's page; a shown score never carries your name. Ratings are also counted in the site's statistics, in totals only.
- Notes you write with a rating are private. They are never shown to anyone else.
- Watches — request types, addresses or map areas you asked to hear about. An address is often a home, so these are visible only to you.
Email and notifications
- Sign-in emails go to the address you type, and nowhere else.
- The daily digest is off unless you turn it on, goes only to an address you confirmed, and every one has a link that stops it.
- Push notifications in the app, if you allow them, tell you when a request you sent or follow changes. For that the site keeps the device token Apple gives the app. It is removed when you sign out or delete your account, or when Apple reports it no longer valid.
Email is delivered by Mailgun and notifications by Apple; each receives only what it needs to deliver the message.
What is never done
No advertising. No tracking across apps or websites. No analytics profile. Nothing is sold, rented or shared for marketing. Information is shared only as described above: with the City when you send a report, and with the services that host the site, sign you in, and deliver email and notifications.
Deleting your account
On the website, open your account page and choose Delete my account. In the app, open Account and choose Delete account. Either removes, immediately: the account, its sign-in record, your list, your ratings and notes (including any score you chose to show), your watches, your digest address, and your registered devices.
Two things are outside this site's reach: requests already filed with the City are the City's records, and the record that a request was sent (without your contact details) is kept as described above.
Children
This service is for residents reporting issues to their city and is not directed to children under 13. It does not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date above changes and signed-in users are asked to accept the new version. Questions, or a request about your information: support@alex311visibility.me.
